Improved Geneva Red is Geneva Red x E.G.

Do you have any info about the pedigree of other DEC selections ?

No, I don’t think so

Thank you! Do you know of a publication in NAFEX, Nutshell, etc. that states this?

Saw it on Don’s Facebook page.

You were lucky  He delated most of his persimmon posts. I could only recall that he mentioned that row M from Claypool crosses is made of MB x Killen and one of his crosses is Miller x George but I’m not sure which one…

I’ve added the ancestry of DEC Improved Geneva Red.

Here’s a tentative list of EG-free cultivars:

Can you recall where you got this information?

On Facebook Taylor Malone said:
“DEC Goliath has ‘Miller’ as the female parent. It is a Donald Compton cross and selection. I believe it is pure virginiana. I dont know a whole lot more about it than that.”

Most people who have ‘Goliath’ got it from either Cliff England or Darren Bender-Beauregard and neither of them know its ancestry.

When asked specifically about ‘Goliath’ Don Compton’s generic response was, “all of my breeding records were lost”.

Not sure if its a hybrid or not. The fruit is not any bigger than most American cultivars.

Does DEC Goliath fruit hold on the tree for you like hyrbids do, instead of dropping? I recall Timothy Lane mentioning that is his England’s orchard tour youtube video from last fall. He mentioned this as a reason some/Cliff suspect it may be a hybrid.

That picture was taken at Cliffs, I don’t have it growing myself. I don’t remember if the fruit held on like a hybrid or not. It seemed like a small tree to make so much fruit. I want to say I got some odd shaped seeds from it. Cliff has it growing next to other hybrids.

If it is a hybrid I would guess that it has a lot of virginiana since the fruit is not very big.

Did DEC have a hybrid in his breeding program?

He definitely did do some hybrid work. For example there are several DEC Nikita’s Gift x Thor crosses, and also DEC Improved Rossyanka.

Do we know if these names are synonyms for pretend any of these below (i was looking at the Excel file for the family tree project and dont think i saw the synonyms listed):

HERSHEY DT MIDDLE
HERSHEY FRUIT DUMP (JOSEPHINE)
HERSHEY LAMBERT(FORMERLY THOUGHT TO BE SHOTO)
HERSHEY MACKENZIE CORNER
HERSHEY MACKENZIE MIDDLE
Hershey Woodbine Sucker

I have a Buzz’s Favorite grafted and heard about Dale’s Favorite from a news article was curious.

Hershey DT Middle = Downingtown Middle = Downingtown Center.

Mackenzie Corner = Early Golden

That is correct that Fruit Dump = Josephine
And Shoto = Lambert

There also exist Buhrman and Kitch among his plantings.

I don’t know who Buzzy’s Favorite is as another cultivar name.

Dale’s Favorite, Mackenzie Middle, and Woodbine Sucker are all non-grafted, seedling trees. Dale’s Favorite and Woodbine Sucker are feral volunteers, but Mackenzie Middle may have been part of a planting.

I got an info from Buzz nearly 2 years ago about Buzzy’s and Dale’s Favorite. Both were described as grafted trees.

Buzzy’s favorite is certainly grafted but Dale’s Favorite is certainly not – it is from a small volunteer seedling hanging over the road. I dont think it existd anymore.

Buzz Favorite is a unknown grafted tree in Hersheys backyard collection. Its just below Fruit Dump (which Zach Elefers now thoughtcto be Josephine). Its a smaller fruit then many there, slightly better flavor from my perspective.
Dales Favorite is a very small fruited seedling tree in an old nursery row in another persons yard , hands over there mailbox. I was not impressed with this one, but Dale thought the fruit was amazing flavor.
