I’m trying to make a plan on how many tree pots to purchase. What have you found for success rate for W/T grafting 1) American persimmon cultivars onto American persimmon rootstock and 2) Hybrid (Kasandra etc.) onto American persimmon rootstock? I get about 90% on apples but got 4/10 on pears. If the graft fails will the rootstock send up a sprout (get another shot the next year) like all the apple and pear grafts that failed?
I’ve probably averaged 75% on persimmons. A bit higher for Americans and a bit lower for hybrids. The important factors are temperature (70’s to 80’s) and aggressive removal of rootstock growth until the scion is growing well.
I think seedlings that are established for 1+ years prior to grafting will do even better, but I pretty much just do bench grafting of bare root seedlings.
If it does fail, the rootstock will regrow.
This spring… i did 7 W/T grafts to 1/4 inch -1/2 inch diameter wild dv in my field…
Prok success
WS8-10 success
H63A failed
JT02 success
Kassandra success
Nakitas Gift success
Coroa de ria success
6 of 7 success.
The H63A that failed… sent up another shoot and developed into a very nice little sapling this season… 5 ft tall 1/2 inch diameter now. Going to graft to it again next spring.
I also tried bark grafts to some larger persimmon saplings/trees… from 1.5 inch to 4 inch…
Zima Khurma success
Rich Tooie success
JT02 failed
WS8-10 failed
