And my 2016 Fruiting season begins

Been getting my 1st tastes of the year the last few days. My Red Gem and Sweet Scarlet Goumi are ripening. They are pretty good tasting if you wait long enough to avoid the metallic taste. Never thought they sized up enough does anyone have better size on theirs? It’s easy to grow tough and early. I been grazing it daily, but as other things start coming in not as often. Mulberries, Strawberries, and a few SHB blueberries potted I toted in and out as I was determined to taste more than a handful of Sweetcrisp this year as their early bloom has frustrated me, but they are good on the few the Cardinals and thrashers and family members have left for me. Mulberries Girardi Dwarf is really getting her grove going, Wassica, Kokuso No. 20, and Middleton doing pretty well. Shangri La is not winning my heart 2016 as really shy to bear this year, Others looking good but not their time to shine yet.

This weekend forecast cooler and low humidity that last pic hopefully of the maybe 350-400 outside their winter home or somewhere north if you count the squatter in my future zen garden . Hoping to get some inground, but at least moved to summer location and get my makeshift irrigation in place on them and spread out this weekend. Mostly figs, but plenty of other stuff in smaller numbers. I still don’t know why I do this to myself, maybe if I actually took time to count the pots I could get past denial.

Look these yummy mulberries! My Chicago ever-bear has not flowered yet. How to do keep the tiny bugs out of the mulberry? those can barely be seen but can taste them, really tine , needle point size, little dark yellow bugs inside the each mulberry.

I don’t look for them

extra protein might contribute to logivity

Wow those all look great! Can I graft goumi to autumn olive? The reason I asked is Lawyers nursery sent me a bundle of autumn olives instead of goumi! I found out last year when they made fruit they sent me the wrong bushes. I thought I grew goumi and felt a little like I had a lolly pop wrapper wrapped around my head when I posted pictures of my goumi!

I have not tried grafting. I attempted some cuttings both green and dormant with no takes. I was going to try an airlayer this year. I did start some from seed as not sure how improved the cultvars are to seedlings these Goumi came from Just Fruits and Exotics, but Brandy there told me they came from Northwoods affiliated with One Green World

Nice fat mulbs in your hand. Were those the Geraldis?

Matt,

Yes and that’s the tree in the background. It’s very productive, and ripens over several weeks, most are still green. It’s a great Grazer’s tree
