Any ideas about this unknown(to me) apple

Unfortunately, my computer is still hiding my photos from me so I will try to paint a word picture. The apple is growing in a city park on standard rootstock probably 25-30 years old. The tree is much thinner than wide but not columner. The apple was a full red blush over yellow and some what striped, it was 2" tall and 3.5" in diameter, open calyx and a very short fat stem. The flesh was crisp, very dense, juicy, and lightly yellow. The apple was very sweet with a high acid(sour) component and no astrigency and finished cleanly. The apple was slightly over ripe and watercored , it bruised readily and was heavy in my hand. I ate it all and nibbled the core down to nothing. This would be an excellent cider apple from all the juice and the nice sweet/sour balance. Last year when I tried it I thought it was Baldwin, but I believe Baldwin to be rounder and have a normal stem. I will be grafting 5 of these trees this spring although the grafts from this spring didn’t take. The small city staff didn’t know about the tree other than it was there.

Forgot to mention, disease was limited to sooty blotch and no sign of insect problems.

My guess is it was a seedling rootstock intended to prop up a low vigour variety like a Red Delicious or crabapple but the top died. Probably a Northern Spy Seedling.

Does it look like this:

Or This:

Or maybe it’s a York Imperial a very fine apple:

There is no way of knowing but it’s fun to guess.

39th may I please ask where you acquired those plates of (prints) of apples? they are beautiful. Are they in a book? Or single pieces. thanks.

They are from old USDA Yearbooks i have a small framed collection of these old lithographs that are over 100 years old. The colors jump out at you from that old printing process. You can download them here: http://usdawatercolors.nal.usda.gov/pom/home.xhtml

Thanks so much I would like to buy some of them. Thanks again!

39th, These apples had a short, fat stem 1/4-1/2" . The apples have my body style, short and squat, big around. The red blush covered the entire apple except for the bottom. Definitely not a RD, too short and fat. Color wise the spy is close, but the shape is more donut. It is fun to guess and to get Mrsg to open up her wallet :grinning:
