Beautiful head there. I grew it once years ago but it was so bitter I haven’t tried again, although I’ve had radicchio that wasn’t so bitter.
One of my favorites! I’ve struck out the last couple years due to incredibly persistent groundhogs, but I’ll keep trying.
I also like them split and grilled. You ever try growing the Treviso Tardivo types?
Ours are very mild but we do grow other types that are more bitter. I wonder if yours was more bitter than normal or if you just weren’t used to radicchio compared to something like lettuce?
I’d never had it until I moved to Italy and it was shockingly bitter at first.
Yes, I’ve grown it and it was great for risotto but the quantity you get from 1 plant of tardivo is like a third of the precoce
I think it was the particular variety. I don’t remember the name; got the seed from Johnny’s, way back now. The heads were beautiful, that’s for sure.
I’m used to a fair amount of bitterness in my food but this was beyond us. Could have been my inexperience in growing at the time -operator error is always a possibility!
I like it, but mixed in with other foods. I like it as 10% of a green salad, rice, beans, pasta, etc. Too strong of a flavor to eat it by itself, but lettuce is kind of boring by itself. Lettuce pray.
