Anyone grow white nanking cherries?

I’ve recently read a little about white nanking cherries. According to nurseries they are sweeter and larger than most other nanking varieties. Has anyone grown these? Are they any good for fresh eating?

I planted two this year so it will be While until I can report on this. I am definitely curious myself.

Were they two different varieties for pollination?

I’ve planted a Jules and an Ian varieties thus far. Still trying to get my hands on Gabe!

Keep us updated In future years! I can’t seem to find any reviews of them online.

Edible Landscaping appears to have Gabe today.

Roger Ort lists Gabe, Ian, and Jules all white nanking.

I have the red and I was not impressed in anyway.

I’m wondering if they’ll be sufficiently weird for the birds to not devour them without netting. Probably crazy talk though. :pensive:

Any updates on these fruits?

I’ve been growing them since shortly after I made this post. They are incredibly hardy, somewhat fast growing and very productive bushes. I like the flavor but it’s not my favorite fruit in the world.

I should mention there is the risk of several disease I’ve read about online especially in wet climates but out here in Chicagoland they’ve been nothing but healthy so far.

I have 2 reds and they were doing well and fruited last year but I only had like 1 or 2 to try since birds likely ate most of them. I have sandy soil. They were all chewed up by rabbits this winter and regrew but did not have any flowers. Could compared Gabe vs Jules? I’m trying to decide which one to get.

I can’t say I noticed a large difference in flavor between all of them but my Gabe is way larger and more mature than my Ian and Jules because I similarly had a rabbit attack them. I don’t think its a fair comparison right now.

I can compare them in future years when they’re all mature and report back.

I have an Ian that produced for me last year. Frost took all the fruit this year. The fruit is a little larger than the red fruited nankings I have, but I preferred the taste of the reds. The white fruit has less flavor to me.

Red Nanking are so small, but at least the seed is small to.
