Anyone growing Brittany Gold Apricot? In NE? Anywhere?

Can’t remember exactly what prompted me to buy this one but I can’t seem to find too much info on it. I think I saw it say it produces where other Apricots struggle and it was one of the few still in stock @ Fruitwood Nursery when I was shopping. Well the graft I did indoors 3/11 took and has grown a good 6" and its gonna be another 5 weeks till last frost.

I’ve read lots of you folks’ experiences with Apricots in the more marginal climates and I am aware it is often a sisyphean endeavor. Winterkills, late freezes, rot etc are in my future I’m sure.

Having said that, any experiences with Brittany Gold Apricot? One Green World claims hardy down to z4. I have a list I made somewhere of cots that might do well in the northeast but this isnt on there. Any thoughts on taste, disease resistance, hardiness etc… ? Vigor seems decent as it barely gets any light currently and is growing strong.

Also can anyone tell me whats the deal with all the nemaguard hate? I have this on nemaguard, nothing else was available. I’m growing lovell from pits this year for next years apricot trials. But as far as I understand people don’t like nemaguard, and I’m almost positive its not recommended for the northeast. I’m right by the NY/MA/VT border area.

Thanks

Cummins is in NY and uses Nemaguard for a lot of their peaches. I was under the impression it was fine, it just was resistant to the nematodes they had in the… South, I think?

Yeah youre absolutely right thanks for assuaging my fears. I do remember reading it was only resistant to some obscure type of southern nematode but not any others which makes for an interesting name and was part of my confusion.

Seems like theyll do fine although maybe not the best choice for wetter areas.

I don’t know anything specific about Brittany Gold, but I think you should do just fine with Nemaguard as a rootstock. There is still a large percentage of the almond orchards in California planted to it. As stated above, it is resistant to some of the root knot nematodes that are present in the San Joaquin Valley soils.
If you are planning on trialing apricots on Lovell in your area,- your Brittany Gold/Nemaguard should be fine.
