Anyone growing maqui berry?

I picked up a few maqui Chilean wineberry plants from my favorite backyard nursery this spring and I was hoping to get them in the ground before winter, but I’m struggling finding a whole lot of info about them. My bit of Google research sounded like it should be slightly shaded and very well irrigated in my area (just north of Portland Oregon). Anyone have any experience growing or eating these? I saw a food plot in Seattle looked like it was growing in a field, so that didn’t really match what I was reading. The description on OGW website makes them sound good for fresh eating? I’d love a bit more info so I know how much effort to put into their planting location. (If they are delicious for eating I’ll probably try a bit harder to make sure they are in a great location, otherwise it will just become a landscape plant that might feed some of the birds :woman_shrugging:)

Edit: not to be confused with wineberries that are similar to raspberries. The Latin name is Aristotelia chilensis.

I believe this is the same fruit, alot of information in that thread. @Luisport is growing it looks like.

Do you eat it fresh? Or process the fruits?

I skimmed through the previous post, I will look closer when I have more time to sit and read through it. Any tips for growing it?

Hi. It takes a lot to flower and its dioic. They flavor is like a acid berry but not totally bad. Its tiny. I grow them due its very healthy.

Haven’t grown these myself but they’ve been on my radar for a while. Did the nursery tell you whether the plants are of known sex? Since they’re dioecious you’d want at least one of each to get a decent fruit set.

This one was labeled as self-fertile. I’ve had good luck from other purchases from this nursery so I’m hoping that this one will be good too. OGW is not too far from this nursery and they also sell a self-fruitful variety that apparently came from cistus nursery so I’m thinking they all have the same variety.
