I had several species and a hybrid years ago. ‘Scarlet Sentinel’, ovata grandiflora, a Korean type, and a red petiole’d species, rostrata .I’ve forgotten the details but remember the plants well. They did fairly well for eastern KS, winter of 89 nailed grandiflora, a heatwave killed SS when I missed a watering, and a city right-of-way worker killed the red rostrata. Had the blue stamened coastal species, malacodendron, in a clay pot plunged in ground seasonally, unheated basement overwinter.
I had an enormous Stewartia in my yard in Newport, RI. Close to 20’ tall. A magnificent tree.
