If you don’t mind 1-3’ trees and you want to add more you might check here http://www.hiddenspringsnursery.com/plants.html#Jujube
Thanks, that is a great price.
Haha, had no idea what that was. Thought it was some kind of Italian greeting. Had to look it up. LOL. Sometimes just gotta laugh at my own ignorance.
Here is a better picture of it:
how old is it, and does it need heat in winter?
and since this has diverged away from topic, might as well add–sad to learn about tim howard leaving, though happy to have him back here
Picked up another Li for my dad as he was so happy with the size and how it looked.
I went to Home Depot this morning and they had 3 Lang jujubes. First time I’ve ever seen them there. $32, but a much smaller tree.
32$ is a good price for any potted size, since solid roots are always better than bare-root, on top of home depot having a 1 year-no-questions-asked and money-back policy for unsatisfactory performance/death.
btw, the specimen on the picture being depicted as ‘lang’ seems to be a chico or a porterville. So if the specimen on the picture is what is being sold, then that would be an extremely good deal.
if you have other specimens, where branching and thorns are visible, i would appreciate if you post it, since lang is not particularly thorny and grows thorns at certain angles.
Now I’m interested in maybe grabbing this one too, for myself. I’ll see if I can get a picture of the actual tree itself.
if you have close-up pics of the lateral branches and its thorns, i’d be able to wager whether or not it is a lang. If it has fruitlets 1 cm or larger, that could also give some hint as to whether or not it is a lang.
Myself, I wouldn’t waste the space for a Lang, it’s not usually very tasty.
especially if one has just started planting jujubes!
lang is one of the main culprits behind the ‘stigma’
only reason i still have one is because i used it as understock, and for the whimsy of ‘completing’ the collection, lol
here’s a hj grafted this year on lang, and both are fruiting profusely.
*lang is the figure-of-8-shaped fruits borne below the graft, while hj is the typical oblong fruitlets borne above the graft(wrapped in foil)
Here are the two jujubes they had at the home depot. I took pictures of both. The trunks are definitely different looking, both labeled as Lang. If you guys think it is something else, I’ll definitely pick it up.
Jujube #1
Jujube #2
Instant Jujube fruits is a good buy.

the thick thorns kind of steer me away from a lang identification, but since you say the specimens are smallish, it is possible it could still be a lang(smaller/younger jujus tend to have more pronounced thorns than bigger specimens, and almost totally disappear when they reach tree-size).
the fruits are still too tiny to make a call.
if no one buys them, you could check maybe two weeks from now and hopefully the fruits have grown bigger.
i just posted a pic of ~1 cm lang fruitlets(in an earlier post in this thread), and it is at that size when the slender-at-the-waist characteristic of lang fruitlets manifests.
Do you make anything of the zig zag trunk on the first jujube, or is that not an indicator?
yes, the zigzaggy trunk also steer me away from labeling a lang, and more of a chico(which is purportedly a relative of the contorted).
and the rather thick-at-the-base spines of ‘juju#1’ also hints at chico… but still not 100% sure.
Thanks, I bet it will still be around in a few weeks. I’ll try and get a picture of the fruit when it is more easily identifiable.
Is anyone seeing available jujube trees right now? I got screwed over by Cliff England on my order so am looking for a couple trees.
What variety are you wanting?
My order this year was for HJ and Sugarcane but at this point I’m open to almost anything.
Try Cliff England at nuttrees.net. Call him personally. He will try to get them for you.
