Quite awhile ago planted two, but a deer walked through, chomped’em off and they died.
Variety intrigues me and next yr opening up another area so juglone’s not an issue.
Guessing if survive what; 8-10 yrs to see nuts?
thanks.
i planted 5 from seed and all 5 sprouted. also planted 20 Dunstan chestnuts and they all sprouted. if i don’t get the chance to taste them , at least my kids will. everywhere that ive read says they are hardy to z3 so I think you at least have a chance. maybe plant in a wind protected spot near a south facing wall?
Boy ain’t that the truth? Love that saying, “if you plant a shade tree just know it won’t be you enjoying a picnic under it”.
This spring shored up our aging shelterbelts; transplanted caragana/lilac, planted a row of smokey s’toon’s as a 4th row(aging shelterbelt, adding layers); and a bunch of okanese poplars.
Those things are Amazing. Many from 6" seedlings to over 4’ tall just this year. Between deer/rabbits/grasshoppers expect to lose a few, but those that escaped the pests, Wow!
Prairie shelterbelt program in case in canada. 6 bucks/seedling pkg’s of 10.
Definitely more of those on the menu.
Until a disease immune variant shows up, I wouldn’t put much effort into them. It’s been a long time since I saw one healthy and mature enough to bear.
Purdue University has seedlings that are 75% butternut and 25% japanese walnut. Obviously not every seedling is going to be perfect, but there’s a chance you get some with decent quality nuts and disease resistance. Worth a look and they’re cheap.
