Anyone try animal sweet feed for coon bait?

I read here someone used feed corn for coon cage traps. Went to Tractor Supply tonight and bought #50 feed corn for $8 and change. I am giving it a try tonight. But I saw some animal feed that may work better. It is #50 for under $12.

I’ve been using old bread and pnut butter with good success over the years in the live catch cage traps. But it is a pain to bait the 3 traps and you get tons of ants.

We switched to those little foil covered plastic containers of cat food. Works great. Relatively cheap. We have got possums and raccoons with it.

I have watched them gobble up that stuff when it’s used for deer feed so I’m sure they will eat it. The problem I had was them eating without setting off the trigger on my trap. I took an ear of corn on the cob and drilled a hole through it ran a wire through. Tied one end to the trigger and one to the cage. I guarantee you they will pull on it if they go in. I have had to use an old tarp over it to disguise the trap They are smart.

The tiny marshmallows draw them in like flies. I took 5 in 5 days last time I tried. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

When I was a teenager and trapped raccoons for their pelt, we made our own bait/lure.
Take a squeeze bottle of honey and warm it up, pour in 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon of anise oil or black licorice flavoring used for candy making. Mix up real well, half dozen drops of that mixture on a cotton ball worked well for us.
