Appalachia Heritage Foods

Here’s an easy to read pdf about fruits and vegetables that highlights the diversity of food in the Appalachian region of the South. Some stories about people searching for and preserving varieties from the past. Some nice tables of variety origin and status today. Lots of apples, beans and peas. But also Pawpaw and other good stuff to eat. Note there are two apple lists, commercial and passed along. Blue list and green list.

Turns out I have a UGA reference file of this under a different name. But a great reference.

Anyone interested in this topic should check out Bill Best’s work: https://www.heirlooms.org/

Also Southern Exposure Seed company has lots of good Appalachian heirlooms.
