Interesting looking apple mammuang. I have been trying to convince myself to try a red/pink fleshed apple. I would almost have to actually taste them to see what is worthy of taking space in my orchard.
Have you thought of grafting a limb on some other tree?
Yes. I am probably going to try grafting this year. I prefer to get 2-3 varieties on each of my trees. At least try to anyway.
My Rubaiyat was much improved this season, too! It wasnât quite as good as the Pink Parfait, but still quite tasty. It had a different type of berry flavor, and was somewhat stronger-flavored than PP. It was juicier and crisper than itâs been in the past, too.
Christmas Pink is another very good late red-fleshed apple. Itâs fairly large, very juicy, and has a pleasant crisp texture.
Pink Pearl is my best early red-fleshed apple, but Mottâs Pink is a clear second. Itâs a week or two earlier, and while more tart, itâs still good for fresh eating (and cooking).
A somewhat different early pink-fleshed variety that I like is Strawberry Parfait. It has a soft pear-like texture, and an interesting strawberry-like flavor and aroma. I wasnât sure Iâd like it, but I do.
I have Airlie Red Flesh, but I find it unremarkable here, Iâm afraid.
Blush Rosette has been a decent mid-season red thus far, but Iâm hoping for some improvement as the tree settles in. Pink Pearmain was killed last spring by a late frost, and Iâll probably not replace it given its similarity to Blush Rosette. Thornberry is slow-growing and has been forgettable in the past, but this season it gave me one very tasty raspberry-flavored apple. That bought it a reprieve.
Not ready to report on Red Devil, Grenadine, and Rosette yet. Red Devil is just starting to bear, and Iâll be grafting Rosette this season. Both sound promising. Grenadine is a benchgraft and two or three years from bearing.
Almost forgot: Iâm putting in a Winekist and grafting Almata this season, too.
Thank you fir your review.
The drastic improvement of Rubaiyet from last year to this year was a pleasant surprise. I hope it will get even better next year.
I grafted Pink Pearl, Mott Pink and Arlie Red Flesh somewhere on my trees. The only graft I know for sure where it is is Redlove Calypso because of its red leaves. It may fruit next year. Iâve heard Redlove Odysso is the sweetest among the Redlove series. Wish I had that one.
The Rising Sun Fuji is an early(er) Fuji apple. I believe it ripens 6 weeks earlier than the regular Fuji. It is a beautiful apple here where I grow it. My next door neighbor is moving to another state and wants to get one of these varieties when he actually gets a house there. He is an older guy and really likes the taste and the way it grows.
These are photos of the 2018 or 2019 season. Last year 2020. I did not get but a few apples because of the freezing temps we got as all the trees were blooming.
I did like them very much. I started to buy red fleshed apples now 15-16 years ago. They were still crosses of very red crabapples so many of the sizes of the apples were small to medium at best. I had an Arborose , a Scarlet Beauty or Scarlet Delight, Motts Pink ( just really loved the shape of that apple and taste, too tart for many; it made the best tart) I also had a Rubyiat. All of them were so, so in color. I moved on to red fleshed peaches. I I will look for a true Peche de Vigne.
You should try baya marisa and red love odysso⌠they are very goodâŚ
Room for only so many pots. I donât want a jungle!
Almata like several red fleshed isnât very fast growing evidently, and the scionwood is always skinny.
After having a Winekist freeze and die 4 to 5 years ago in a pot on M111 root, I grafted it and from memory without looking, itâs on Antonovka or B118, I donât recall. But got my graft planted this summer where I want itâŚonly to have the deer eat the leaves all off.
Pink Parfait is the only Etter apple I still have, others died from lack of enough TLC.
Did you find Mottâs Pink prone to fireblight? I have 3 trees and am concerned about one of them.
No, what was great about the apple that its only enemy was squirrels! I bagged, then netted the tree!
For what itâs worth, Iâve found Christmas Pink to be the most vigorous of the red-fleshed apples that Iâve grown up to now, and Thornberry and Rubaiyat the least (though the latter reliably bears heavily). I encourage more folks to give Christmas Pink a try.
My last English Golden Russet. Picked ended of Oct, ate today, 01/10/21.
Not a keeper. It went from firm, sweet with a bit of aroma to somewhat mealy and bland in 2 months.
Beautiful apples! I tried to order a Rising Sun Fuji last year from Schlabachs but they were sold out.
I have wanted to try Motts Pink based on some of your past posts. I should graft a branch or two. It sounds great!
My Rising Sun is from Schabach. Mine is very late.
Now that I checked its catalog, maybe, they probably sent me Nagafu Fuji (a very late variety) by mistake. Too bad.
Bummer mamuang, that you wanted an earlier Fuji variety. I am very happy with the Rising Sun Fuji.
Good to hear Mutsu apples are good for fresh heating. My tree has looked like it was on deaths doorstep for the last 3 years and no fruit, so maybe it gets another reprieve. I can hear it cry every time I walk past it with a shovel
Well, âgoodâ is a relative term. Mutsu is better than a underripe Yellow Delicious. I would think of it as a âutilityâ appleâŚworks for a number of uses, but isnât best in class of any of them. Not one to spit out if youâre hungry, but on the bland side. And not as good as a tree-ripened Granny Smith after the tartness mellows.
Honeycrisp and Grimes Golden have been my two top yellow apples for fresh eatingâŚand I donât particularly crave either. My Grimes tree diedâŚdeer kept the foliage ate off for two seasons. Ginger Gold is good, too.
Iâm hoping my Hudsonâs Golden Gem will be a winner and Golden Sweet will have an apple or two this year. And I have a seedling apple that may have a first fruit this year.
