@Paul-VA the lean could be from when the road was put in or widened, it appears that the tree is right at the base of the berm of the road. A small amout of dirt/gravel pushed up against a small sapling would give it a lean. ?
Either way if its a named variety or a wild seedling, it sounds like a keeper.

Actually looks and sounds like a great apple to graft or get a few scions to try.
