Apple Trunk Cavity

I’m topworking a friend’s 40 year old apple tree and noticed a cavity in the trunk about four inches wide and deep. Probably where a branch was allowed to rot off.

Is current best treatment to just leave it alone?

In the old days I remember people filling cavities with cement but believe that just seals in moisture and rot, yes?

Yes, in most cases the experts say leave it alone.

I found a cavity under one of my larger apple scaffolds today, something must have hit it hard a few years ago but I never noticed it until now.
