Goldrush Apple from Boyer’s. On M111/M9 interstem. Growing but doesn’t “look healthy” to me. Planted this March.
Compare to my PF25 peach, same source, planted same time:
Looks much more lush. Thoughts? Are both “ok”?

Never mind the weeds, I have both trees planted on the north end of my vegetable garden, because they have to be inside the fence in this area, or deer will just obliterate it. I’m slowly De-weeding and straw mulching the orchard area of my garden.
Looks like the goldrush has Cedar Apple Rust, which can hit a young tree pretty hard in my experience. Myclobutanil, commonly available as Immunox, works very well has a preventative and doesn’t have to be sprayed a lot.
I sprayed it with Immunox a couple weeks ago.
I have to spray very early in the season to prevent CAR on my trees. I don’t see any CAR on the newer leaves (probably hit with the Immunox while very new) but I see a lot on the older leaves (probably infected with CAR before the immunox).
To my understanding once the apple leaves have been infected with CAR there is no cure as it were. You can try to prevent it but you can’t cure it. It usually hits when temps and rain/humidity are just right in the spring. If trees are susceptible and get infected they will display the rust for the rest of the season. Conditions often are not right later in the season for infection during the second flush of growth and those leaves are not infected.
The tree might grow a little slower this season but as long as it isn’t stressed too much on other fronts (other diseases or pests) it will probably be fine and you can try prevention methods next year.
For what it is worth I have several trees that display CAR and appear fine other than that. Then I have a couple of trees that display CAR and were hit pretty hard by whooly aphids. They are all holding on so far even though the ones hit by aphids are looking kind of wimpy.
It has still put on about 12” of growth so far on the Central leader and 6-8” on other shoots. All of the growing tips are still active, and have not yet set terminal buttons.
