i had fruit drop off the tree years ago, i used a bit too much nitrogen fertilizer not knowing any better and that triggered the drop, a novice mistake.

No nitrogen fertilizer. Fruit trees in general don’t need fertile soil, unlike vegetables.

I think it depends a lot on your soil. my apple trees werent growing at all until I started hitting them with some N every spring. literally they were growing like 6 inches or so a year. I cant wait 10 years for a 5 foot tree! lol

In my area, providing nitrogen alone in the spring is not ideal. Trees grow fast pushing out tender shoots. This makes them more susceptible to fire blight when spring turns wet and warm.

You could just give them some nitrogen later in the Summer instead of first thing in the Spring if you want them to put on some growth after temps are out of the 70s+wet. I’m trying to keep my trees pickable from the ground, so I mostly just give them bone meal and more woodchip mulch.
