Apricots 2025

Unfortunately my Robada showed late graft incompatibility with myro rootstock (strong suckering, extremely low vigor).

I managed to save a scion and graft it to Lovell this year so we’ll try again next year.

I’m disappointed to hear you didn’t like the flavor. If it doesn’t turn out I think I’ll top work with a Tomcot which seems to be universally liked.

It seems to be picky on location. It was never consistent for me, the fruits did not always ripen well. When it was good it was really good though. But I eventually gave up and replaced it with a Florilege, it is similar in being tasty and crispy, but it also very easy to grow. Tomcot is also great, you can’t go wrong with it.

My cots got frozen out this year alas. But, I recently found a huge bag I dried from last year but forgot about… dried sure beats none!

Wow, you already have apricots!!!

Mine are just starting to wake up and some of them haven’t even started yet, but the two I just bought from Costco have leaves on them, but they came from a warmer location poor things.

We have a Harcot. I can’t wait to hear what you think about the fruit.

Summer Delight apriums. Everything else is still tiny.

I got two Harcots by mistake. One of them has much smaller but more abundant fruit than the other.

How do you like the fruit?

Very much. But I prefer the aprium, whenever I get fruit from it.

My summer delight aprium is sizing up quickly too, first time fruiting and I am wondering what is it going to do for the next 4 more months before it ripens.

our weather gets both extremes, it’s in full sun so

and scout;

again, they’re in the most exposed spot for extreme heat and cold here. it can get dry too. needed tough trees for the place they had to go

what would you recommend as a natural pest repellent for a baby apricot tree??
its about 10 inch tall now and something was eating all the leaves last year and i thought it was dead and this year its healthier than ever.

Bug netting maybe? Repellents mostly don’t work as few organisms would rather starve than be mildly annoyed or inconvenienced.

I agree with @evilpaul. If your tree is only 10” tall it should be very easy to net it. I’d go with that.

thanks guys

thankyou

just planted 20 Manchurian pits in flats. not from named varieties so every tree could be a surprise.

Tomcot - I am not going to thin it. Just amazed how the leaves are able to support so many fruits.

The pluots are also crazy. Front is flavor king, back is flavor supreme (which is notoriously difficult to fruit). I might have some super bees in my yard.

Thinning will make the fruit quality much better, also what you will loose in numbers will be gained in size/weight. I would definitely thin.

FS sets very well for me every year, but it aborts 99% of the fruitlets. Hopefully it will behave better for you.

Thanks for the advice. I thin my peaches very hard (1 branch 1 fruit). I just want to see how this tomcot looks like when it ripens. The branch was grafted in 2023 and gave me one fruit last year.

I grafted FS and FK in 2023 and got about 12 FS and 25 FK in 2024. What you see in the picture of FS will likely stay (total of around 30 FS). I definitely need to thin FK. Somehow many FK cracked in my climate last year (close to your former DE location).

FK cracks for me too, but usually the cracks heal and the fruits make it to ripeness, and still taste great. But of course some succumb to rot.

FS and Flavor Grenade are worse crackers than FK.

So interesting how we all have different experiences with the same tree variety but a different climate and time.

Of all places that should have issues with cracking fruit, my first year fruiting FG had zero cracking last year…even with single day rainfall totals of 2,3,4 and more inches.

I did lose just a few to rot, but those were ones that had skin punctures from something or another.
