Arborist or Orchadist? Something else?

There is frequently division when referring to fruit tree experts. Credentials are used freely, such as farmer, horticulturist, master gardener, orchardist, or arborist. In my opinion orchardist is the correct term for our business.

As you can see there is a slight difference in all of these terms. I’m not offended by being called anyone of the terms.

I don’t consider myself an expert at all. But, growing up, I was regularly told that I was “something else”, so that tracks.

My issue is the expert bit. At best I aspire to become a journeyman…lol

I still feel lost on grafting. Some take so fast. Some just sit there. Paying attention and using the same techniques; seems like more consistent results would be had.

Grafting is simple in idea but challenging in application sometimes. As seasoned grafters we all have our tricks. I use highly compatible interstem scion wood frequently. It delivers 100% grafting takes typically. That mere slight difference might give someone the illusion i’m better at grafting when that is not the case. Pafilm is another edge i use ensuring my grafts callous properly and dont dry out. I use plasticine clay so that no oils seap into my grafting unions. A new grafter does not know all the tricks. Many times i might make 1000 sloppy grafts if im in a hurry that all take. The truth is expert grafters can make living ladders and other things i am unable to completely master yet. Everything just takes time and practice and thousands of grafts. Rootstock and scions make a huge difference. I would gladly compete in a grafting competition if one was available. The experts like @39thparallel that graft thousands of whips a year are amazing at that. My expertise is in top working trees. Many of you are in fact fruit growing experts. If you were competing against people from your county how good are you then? My guess is most of you would be teaching the classes rather than competing.

Farmer by the definition you posted. Learner of fruit trees. Its very hard being a learner when no one around you would even touch a fruit tree, except for pears. Let alone share their knowledge, because they have none. If fuit trees we critters for the table, I would be OK. But this forum and countless hours of research are my only hope.

I am going to blame the weather for most of our growing woes. From the very late cold start. To crazy wet. To drought. To now insane heat.

We are going to clear out some old pens on the shady side of the house and relocate new plants to that side

At least where I live, practically speaking, an arborist charges a lot of money to cut trees down and an orchardist charges almost no money to grow a lot of trees up. :joy:
