Arctic Blast in the long term (60 days) forecast!

I think I’ll curl up with a good book…Not going anywhere for a couple days. I may also binge watch netflix and straz series. I need to catch up on Outlander and other series.

Yeah, yeah…there’s problems with that chart. Cincinnati Ohio was minus 35 once…made history as the coldest spot in the nation. January 1985 if I recall correctly. Minus 33 is the record for Somerset KY. Minus 7 (1977) is all time record for Charlotte NC. (I think the Chicago number may be correct. And Int’l Falls.) (The minus 20 for Buffalo in 1961…maybe, but it was minus 29 here that year in Kentucky.).

Kansas City (where I live close to) got to minus 23F in 1989 (Actually I remember that. I remember getting out of the vehicle filling up with gas that day. Really cold.) The next coldest record for KC was in 1899 at minus 22F. I imagine few peach trees survived.

That year was next closest to the lowest temp, 1905. In 1905, Lebanon KS got to -40F, a record which still holds… Lebanon is north and almost in NE.

fargo and intl falls has us beat . -40f is our coldest. -55f! now thats alaska type cold right there! even with block heaters i doubt any vehicle left outside would turn over in that! i remember in my teens, one winter it hit -37f w/ 30mph winds! nearly -100 windchill! tree trunks were splitting because it was so cold and dry! 10ft. deep water mains froze in town!

Couderay, WI hit -55 and Tower, MN hit -60, both in 1996

thats wicked cold as what us mainers would call it!

Strange to see winter days where most of Alaska is warmer than the Great Lakes region.

Based on Accuweather and Weather.com it is supposed to be white outside. They blew it. Not a drop…just some black ice in places.

Will see how low the temps go…but so far they don’t appear to be going to get as low as we usually hit at least once per winter. That being zero or a bit below.

The Ice fisherman are happy this cold spell will freeze the lakes well.
I’m grateful it is very short lived.

can’t even go up here. lots of ice but also lots of slush on the ice to get the sled stuck in! thats no fun and I’m not 25 anymore.

Well, if we stay above zero tonight, and tonight is the coldest night of the winter……(I suspect both are correct assumptions)……then that puts us in USDA zone 7 for this year anyhow.

But in the last 60 years, we’ve had a winter low as cold as minus 33 and a winter low of plus 13. With typical between zero and 5 below over many years of records.

I see there’s a book in print about 33 years of coming small ice age instead of global warming…we shall see who is right. But what we do know is there are times in the past 1100 years when it’s been colder, and times when it’s been hotter…times when there’s been higher CO2 in the air…and times when it’s been lower.
