I’ve only had a couple of ripe persimmons this year from Miss Kim and Saijo. Both had seeds. Best guess what would you think is male parent. I have Eureka that is supposed to be able to pollinate. I haven’t ever had Eureka fruit with seeds yet but there might this year. Are there other Asians that have male blooms? I do have some small Americans and there are wild Americans around but I wouldn’t think the pollination would be from an American.
Not Saijo, I have a couple of them. Not the Americans either. That leaves Miss Kim and Eureka. Who is the newest one to flower?
Miss Kim. I think I had a few with seeds last year when Eureka was down and out from the vortex we had. It grew back last summer and has a few fruit this year. I had fruit from Miss Kim last year and I think I remember having a few seeds in Miss Kim and Tecumseh fruit. I didn’t realize there were many Asians that produced male blooms. I also have Giombo, Sheng, (both first time fruiting and not ripe yet), Chinebuli (fruited last year but none this year), Pen, and Wase Fuyu (neither have fruited yet).
That’s a lot more suspects. I’m not sure who all throws random male flowers. You may need to look for them next year. Many people say they taste better with seeds though. I only have seeds in the americans so I can’t attest to that.
It would be interesting to grow your seeds out and when they are large enough to cut scions, you could graft onto your mature trees to see how their fruit compares to your other varieties. So far I have not had an Asian with seeds, so you may be in luck! I did graft both Saijo and Miss Kim this year but it will be at least 2-3 years before I can expect fruits.
