This is the first of many pickings that I’ll take from this tree.
Out of all of the plums that I’ve grown over the years, this is
my favorite. It always gives me a crop, even after freezes, and
the plums are delicious. This year, which has been exceptional,
I should harvest over 200 lbs. from this tree. IT IS LOADED.
If you live in the South, this is a must plum for your yard,
Although it is self fruitful, if you’ll pair it with another plum like Santa
Rosa, you’ll get exceptional fruit set, on both trees.
Good sets even after freezes? That is nice, plums are harder here than apricots with late freezes.
You convinced me to try that one based on your past comments … this will be the first year I get harvest on my graft, looking forward to it! I should also have some Producer and Roadside to compare it with.
I haven’t found it all that different in terms of freezes though, it got 100% frozen out last year.
They look great Ray. I have about six on my tree this year and they are starting to get darker. Do you let them soften a little before picking? I’m not sure what stage they would need to be in for the best taste.
This is a hard plum to judge on ripeness. When it’s ripe, it
turns dark purple, but the haze on the plum still makes it
hard to judge. When its dead ripe, the skin is very dark,
and will just melt in your mouth. At that stage, you need to
either stand over the sink or wear a large bib. Exceptional
flavor. I LOVE this plum.
Thanks
Producer and Roadside were big disappointments for me. While
both were good growers, they were very shy with fruit set and the
plums that I did get were sub par. I removed both trees.
My AU Rubrum harvest seems a little meager compared to Ray’s
No doubt about it, you got me. I’m going to buy and plant one of these next year for sure. Amazingly for someone who lives in the south, I don’t have a single AU plum- and I love plums. Your reviews and comments sold me. But more than anything, knowing you have Spring Satin and STILL say this is your favorite plum is enough to convince me for sure! (or maybe you don’t compare since SS is a plumcot?)
Thanks for photos and review. I’m planting it.
I’m getting some AU Rubrums in, they are good but not as much flavor as the Early Magic also coming in now. It looks like yet another bust on the southern plums for me … all are low in flavor. Black Ice is also coming in now, its tasty but they are cracking so its getting removed.
Every one’s tastes are different and I don’t think any variety does well
in every location. For example my Emerald Beaut fruited well for me this year but I was so disappointed in the taste that I was planning on removing it.
But my girlfriend says it’s her most favorite plum out of all of the plums
and pluots I grow. Go figure. No, I’m not removing it. But if she ever goes, so goes EB.
