Avocado Tree Purchasing Question

Has anybody had experience buying avocado trees online? I could use any suggestions. Did a quick search and was a bit surprised at the prices. Didn’t know if this was typical these days. Been a while since I did any pricing. Looking for decent prices and reputable seller. Thanks

I have bought several, however most of them I wouldn’t advise personally. Two died but small avos are constantly trying to die, from sun, wind and heat; likely cold also.

I got my Lila from yarden.com
I ordered one from JF&E but it died from sunburn and drought stress. But that’s user error; however it was a pitiful looking tree for the price.

Avocado tree shipping and sales in the US usually begins in March. Here is a robust supplier:

They aren’t a good source for Avocado trees out east.
Maybe Stewart, and Mexicola Grande but they wouldn’t be my first choice for a cold hardy avo in Georgia

They don’t carry any pure Mexican race avos; Lila, Poncho, Fantastic etc which can tolerate our low temps

If I were to buy another it would be from

They are pricey but they look like robust trees

I should have mentioned that I’m in SE Georgia in Z9a but it’s on my profile. Seems there are several varieties that should grow well here. I can baby it while it’s young. I started an avocado frim seed a few years ago and it grew so fast I got scared and gave it to my stepson. It was not a cold hardy variety though, so no loss. Appreciate the replies. Four winds has some nice varieties.

They do look nice, thanks.

I’ve had a Poncho and Lila in ground for 3 years here in NE NC also 9a. You can do it, but I struggle way more in summer than winter, I had two die from lack of water. Once I started daily water, they have looked great.

I’d get a fantastic, Lila (not to be mistaken with Lula) or Brazos Belle if you can.

In my experience, “organic” nurseries are too cheap to engage in pest control measures. Further, Central Florida is no place to shop for cold hardy fruits.

I would normally agree, but this nursery has the largest amount of cold hardy Avocados I’ve seen at one place

I wouldn’t have believed that extreme Eastern NC would be Z9a but it’s true. I think that’s a perfect example where Heat Zones come into play taking into account Heat Days vs nighttime low temperatures.

I think it’s mostly the Gulf Stream for me being a few miles offshore. It keeps us from wild low temps in winter having water on both sides. One side being the Gulf Stream doesn’t hurt
