Azolla filiculoides

Just ordered some of these after seeing on YouTube as being grown for chicken feed. Apparently they double every 24hrs so could be a good “free” greens for the chickens. Anyone doing something similar? Or tried this before. Curious how hardy they are in winter, but I’ll find out it was $6 I’m out for this experiment.

thats funny. i just did the same. i put them in a kiddie pool with some soil and chicken manure. mines got some duckweed mixed in. i plan to put some in a bowl to overwinter indoors at the end of the season. its only been 3 days so they havent done much. our nights are stlll getting in the mid 40’s.

Yeah I’ll do the same minus the kiddie pool until I need it. Just gonna use some medium Tupperware until it outgrows that. That’s too funny I guess we all saw the same video and thought free chicken feed which self replicates was hard to beat.

Anything to save on feed costs that grows on its own with a high protein / vitamin content deserves my attention. i also grow kale , flax and amaranth for them. thier eggs are a deep yellow.

Now it hasn’t doubled every 24 hours but it’s growing. Which is a shock for how long it was in the mail. Definitely quadrupled itself in the 2 weeks or so I have had it. Only had 4-5 alive green pieces by the time it arrived.

I also have it in a mostly shady spot so that could be why. I’m afraid to move it to full sun but maybe I should
