Baby Red jujubes updated

Some mature Baby Reds

My Baby Red tree did not grow at all this year, so I will not have scionwood. It is potted and produced a lot of fruit, but no vegetative growth to speak of. I hope to get it into the ground this year, so it can get growing again.

Getting some size.

Baby Red is a very good cultivar for the following reasons:

It is one of the last jujubes to leaf out.
It sustained -14 degrees with no damage even though it’s a small plant.
It sets fruit later in the year than the average jujube.
Despite the late fruit set, the fruit ripens mid season.
It is a heavy producer for its size.
The fruit is excellent, in the top 10% for flavor.
If you ever lose the tag on your tree, you will never have a problem identifying it!

Downsides:
It can be difficult to tell when the fruit is ripe. You have to be able to tell when it transitions from dark red to brown and sometimes that is not easy to do.
So far I have gotten very little vegetative growth in 2 years. Next year I will prune it to remove flowers and force vegetative growth.

How is this tree doing after a few more years? It looks like one I might be interested in getting a branch of growing on one of my trees.

Oddly enough it was one of the first jujubes to produce mature fruit last year and kept producing the whole season so it was also one of the last.
