This a second year ‘Maruja’ peach in a container, trained as a central leader. I had to redo the leader from a low branch, and only one of the small branches that stemmed out from it developed some buds, but I have some peaches growing now from those buds.
Next I hope for many more flower buds along more branches
Beautiful balcony! It looks so healthy too, I’d be excited to see updates from you as your gorgeous peach grows
I’m surprised that more having landed here. My open pollenated seedling from 2023. Another year without flowers but at least the leaves are pretty enough to look at.
How exciting!!! They really are beautiful to look at. Next year has to be the year!
That Maruja peach looks great for a second year tree. I have a couple of figs on my balcony and they do surprisingly well in pots, the restricted root space actually seems to help with fruiting. Always curious what other people manage to grow in containers up high.
I’ve been very very tempted by the Ruby Ruffle Purple-leaf-peach pot-trees. If I could find one here in Canada I would have one. I have a Sunroom that approaches a green house in “intent” I’m building over my low deck, and hoped to winter it there. Might be borderline (even with small supplemental heat), in which case it would go in the garage.
Anyway, besides availability lacking in Canada, the rumour is the fruit are all but inedible, specially that the flesh is as little as 3/16” of an inch….around a pit that can be bigger than a commercially grown peach pit.
Eye candy posts from sellers online… (Not my trees) … because hey, I want more people to buy and report back… lol
All of these trees are so cool! Does anyone find that their trees attract certain birds or insects?
Canada is such a pain for plants. Even my aquarium plants are 5-7 years behind in terms of supply compared to the states. That being said, I wonder if getting scionwood wouldn’t be impossible? You’d have better luck than I. BC bans a lot of fruit trees grown even provincially unless they are fumigated, apparently.
Aphids and hummingbirds 10 floors up, but other than that not much. Maybe the occasional bee or wasp, sadly. I imagine it is different for those closer to the ground/with more diversity
I’ve got a couple of potted figs on a south facing patio, nothing as impressive as a balcony setup though. The container size makes such a difference with figs especially, mine fruited way better once I moved them into bigger pots. Would love to see more apple attempts, I’ve been thinking about trying a columnar variety in a pot but not sure how realistic that is long term.
I heard figs do really well in pots; glad to see that is the case with yours! Would be happy to take a peek at your set up.
I think you could. I’ve read that some people here recommend the more vigorous rootstock approach. I thought that was an interesting perspective, so I have a semi-dwarf in a pot right now. The other two are dwarf. I’m approaching them a bit like bonsai. Trim the roots, trim the crown, maybe in the future change the soil to a mineral based one.
How kind, thank you! I will try to keep the updates coming.
