I got sent an apricot with a split in the trunk all the way through the bottom. Thankfully, the grower sent a new one, but since I already planted this one and it is leafing out, I’m wondering if I should just leave it or if it is doomed and should be ripped out.
If you have the space just leave it and see what it does.
Good point. Unfortunately I am not overflowing with space. Could always pot up the new one and see how the split looks next year after a Minnesota winter.
I’d start from the new root. That wound in the soil seems like a recipe for disaster at some point in the future. If the space is desirable invest it in a strong foundation now. Potting the split would cost little even if it fails.
Did you receive the tree like that with all those large roots hacked off like that?
Unfortunately, yes.
I planted a plum on americana rootstock that looked exactly like that last spring (It was my own fault, it happened when I was digging it out of the nursery bed). I wrapped some parafilm tightly around it to close the split and planted it, hoping the parafilm would keep dirt and water out of it enough for it to graft it self back together. It seems to have worked as the tree is still healthy to this day and bloomed and set a few fruit this year.
So I would say it is possible the tree would grow through it, but I don’t blame you for asking for a refund, nurseries should not be sending out stock like that.
