My beech trees next to main pond is invaluable souce of…shade. looks like main tree was cut 20+
Yr ago with clonal vounteers emerging from the roots

They’re nice. But it’s safer to eat them roasted if you’re having more than a handful. Too much of tannins can be too much and some individuals are more sensitive than others.
The Slovak expression for a “mast year” directly translates as “beech nut year”. Probably because that was the perk for us - rather than feeding pigs (eventhough hazels usually join beech and oak).

After I read up on them some years ago I began trying them. I generally don’t spit out the nut flesh but have yet to find a tree that produces nuts that are palatable. I believe that there is some variability, such as with the hickory trees: some produce nuts that are more tasty than another.
