I just read that it was nicknamed the “mortgage lifter” because it was so profitable due to its ability to be shipped long distance with little refrigeration (Ben Davis - New England Apples)
I also remember seeing it being sold by fedco one year. I believe they said in their description that they sold it, not because it was a particularly great apple, but because there are some die hard Ben Davis fans, sounds like they would go down swinging in its defense!
