Berry exports reaching all time highs in Mexico

Huh, I wonder who they’re competing with internationally in blueberries? Can’t be anyone in the temperate zone, our plants are dormant this time of year. Maybe Turkey or South Africa?

Chile and California.

I bet their blueberries taste of water.

That’s a misleading headline in the article; it should read “Mexican berry exports to fall to 460,000 tons”, since the article states that production will fall by 11% this year. Of course, that makes the topic title even more misleading; last year’s crop was clearly higher.

I generally don’t buy berries from the store because they aren’t very good and they’re expensive.

The Driscoll’s raspberries, though, are pretty good.

Driscoll’s is usually pretty decent sub outside of my raspberry season but I did recently try a pack of Alpine Fresh Daniela that was pretty incredible. If that variety was available to home growers I would definitely try to grow it.

Here’s a package of blueberries purchased at the store today, harvested in Chile.

Living in the blueberry belt, I have a hard time buying blueberries from overseas. I did buy some large peruvian berries last winter that were tops on blowout.
As far as blackberries, I usually buy them by the flat, at a buck a pint, and theyre from Mexico. Driscollsis best.

Got some Peruvian blueberries last week. They were darn good. Small but really flavorful. Must be growing them at high elevation, that close to the equator.

There was some questions about how much Mexico’s berries export is increasing. As an example if we look at the big picture the increase is huge https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://apps.fas.usda.gov/newgainapi/api/Report/DownloadReportByFileName%3FfileName%3DBlueberry%2520Annual%2520Voluntary%2520_Guadalajara_Mexico_MX2024-0003.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwi8uuOhovmDAxVxj2oFHexWAt4QFnoECA8QBg&usg=AOvVaw3hOcRlL_sPltoyHSsxmO_-

" According to data from the Secretary of the Economy, the value of Mexico’s blueberry production rose from USD 27 million to USD 264 million between 2013 and 2022 , an increase of 890 percent"

If you look from one year to the next the numbers can be deceptive.

Fall Creek in Oregon,is one of the nurseries, that has been investing their expertise towards Blueberry growing there.

In California agriculture, the second month of the year normally has the highest production of blueberries. One of the packing houses refers to it as FebBLUEary.
