Best fig varieties?

Thanks for the feedback! I think if I try to grow CdD Blanc it should probably be potted. This year our last frost date was in May (Typically beginning of April) and I’d like to grow something that will reliably ripen great tasting figs. I will definitely consider trying Black Manzanita if I can get a hold of one. The pictures and your description sound great.

The spot I plan to grow it in is slightly limited in space but I know figs can be pruned back pretty heavily if needed. Do you have any medium vigor early favorites?

I’m not the best person to speak about early figs because my season is so long. However you can’t go wrong with Smith. It’s early, top quality, and not overly vigorous esp in a pot. There are earlier figs like the Mount Etna types. To learn about them you should go to Ourfigs. There are many people there that grow in pots in short season areas like the northeast, Oregan, and PNW.

The early productive fig I like best is Crozes.

Throw it in a cup of optisorb diatomaceous earth and water weekly until you see leaves. Then twice a week probably won’t hurt. Just make sure you have drain holes. I had only one cutting of about 25 not take with that method this year.

Bring back this thread today I bought about 20 different varieties today at Figaholics. Calderona was on the list, but sold out when I checked out. Anyone has an opinion on this fig?
For some reason I couldn’t purchase Bass’Favorite either. Anyway, what motivated to buy so many varieties is because Harvey said he might not do this next year. I think it’s not too bad to $13 shipping all in total. I’m definitely becoming a Figaholic.

Calderona and Bass’ Favorite fig, BFF, are similar. On the plus side BFF can be very big and very beautiful. Both have issues with fig mosaic virus, FMV, and are rather slow growing as a result.

They’re good figs and have a good reputation for eating quality. To me they sometimes have a slight off flavor. I’d rate them good but not first tier.

I just checked my list again, I did purchase Bass’ Favorite Fig. I’m going to build a wall of figs against my neighbor’s agressive hedge. May the best plants win, lol.

Will this ripen okay in the Seattle area?Could be moved into a greenhouse, during later stage, for more warmth.

On OurFigs.com I just learned that BFF refers to Black Fig Flies.

I can’t say. But given how few figs seem to work up there for main crop, probably not. Give it a greenhouse all year and probably yes.

I thought it’s Bass’ Favorite Fig, thanks for mentioning it, I corrected my post.

No need to correct it. Acronyms have different meanings. Before I found this out, the only BFF I knew about was Best Friends Forever!

I think you’ll have a fighting chance, good luck!

does anyone have Ficus Galluzzo Bianco? maybe it has other names, it should taste very good :woman_shrugging:

Bring back this thread to ask about Pastiliere from Harvey, I added this and UP the last minute because they were $5, I really didn’t have enough time to research.
Yesterday, I potted all of my fig cuttings, I have most of them inside except this fig, UP, and Negra D’Adge, I have no more room inside hence that’s the reason, so I left them outside. I didn’t cover the top even because it’s natural tip. I was very surprised this morning that this fig is the best looking so far even after a cold morning like 40. The tip looks even more green than yesterday. Is this fig worth growing?

It ripens early in the season, although it can drop it’s figs for many years until it reaches an older age. It’s said to have a cherry like flavor. It’s fruit has a chewy texture.

Here is a quote from Harvey himself “Pastiliere is a French fig that is medium size with very dark pulp, intense berry flavor, and moderately to very sweet. Very delicious common fig (not requiring caprification) that should not be confused with Unknown Pastiliere.”

Thank you for your comment. How is Unknown Pastiliere?

It requires the fig wasp, so most people don’t bother with it, I know nothing about it.

I grew up in Italy and have tasted my fair share of amazing figs. My favorite so far has been the White Baca, an extremely rare variety I obtained a few years ago from the Fig Man of New Mexico, Lloyd Kreitzer. It literally tastes like a Peach Bellini Royale if you ever had one. Amazing little fruit!

I previously reviewed it here:

Bring back this thread to say I bought 2 more fig cuttings from KMH, Colonel Littman Black Cross and Calderona. his shipping fee was $10.
Next year Harvey will raise the shipping fee to $25, so I rather not paying that fee if I can help it.
But I keep reading about these figs like Craven’s Craving, Smith, and Harry’s Crete. Are they top tier?
What are the top tier figs beside Black Madeira?

Btw, 12 out of 19 fig cuttings from HarveyC have emerging young leaves, the rest I planted in the ground are doing ok, not dead, not rot. But only Violeta is questionable.

But I think I have, the rest I’m not sure
