Best grapefruit

When are your opinions on the best grapefruit out there. Best tasting? Sweetest? Best for other reasons?

I like grapefruit quite a bit. My wife really likes it though. The only fresh grapefruit I’ve ever eaten was OroBlanco. I don’t know if it was the best grapefruit I’ve had because oroblanco is so good or because it was fresh picked and not from a grocery store.

I’m trying to pick some citrus trees to plant. I doubt that I can zone push enough outside so this will probably be in my greenhouse.

My understanding is that the flying dragon root stock can buy you a couple degrees but also that it is pretty good for dwarfing. What other rootstocks should be considered and why?

Thanks for all opinions and feedback.

Oroblanco is a good variety{a hybrid pomelo/grapefruit} We are likely adding Marsh{seedless} and one of the three “Ruby” varieties. Although I’m pushing to order Shambar which has more flavor and fits out climate more.

Personally I’m more of a sweet Pommelo fan.

I’m also a pomelo fan. Once grew Chandler and liked it. Now have Tahitian and Valentine because they are supposed to be better.

Cocktail is the grapefruit I just planted. It’s supposed to be the sweetest. If you like the acidic grapefruit it might not be for you.

Others just planted are: California Honey, Xie Shan, Shiranui, and Kishu mandarins. Plus Cara Cara navel orange.

I like sweet but sweet with flavor. Not a fan of acidic citrus except for lemons… But, who knows, there are more out there that I haven’t tasted than those that I have. Perhaps I’m run across some acidics I really like.
For now, I’m sticking to sweet.

We are on a wait list for Minneola “Honeybell” variant on standard rootstock from Brightleaf Citrus in Florida. They are great. Also holding on Owaris from them.

the place i got mine from only called it a Mineola so i assume it’s from the original field cross. has the bump on the top like the ones in the store.

Oroblanco and Melogold are siblings, so if you like one the other might be worth checking out.
