Looking to plant two passion fruits and was curious which varieties taste the best? Also, where can you buy them? Havent many online sources for passion fruit.
Are you able to store them somewhere that they won’t freeze in the winter? The wild maypops are hardy, but many others aren’t.
I haven’t tasted a range of named varieties. That would be an enjoyable opportunity. I highly enjoy drinking parcha.
In my opinion, Fredericks by a long shot.
Very true.
Maypop and its cultivars are Passiflora incarnata.
True Passionfruit is Passiflora edulis.
Giant Granadilla is Passiflora quadrangularis.
And there are some other fruiting members of the genus Passiflora …
Only Maypop passiflora will survive a cold winter.
I have eaten yellow passionfruit in Hawaii, cultivar unknown. It was the best. In Hawaii, it is called “lilikoi.” That species will not survive a cold winter.
Will it regrow from roots or does the entire plant die if it hits 32 degrees?
Except for maypops, they shouldn’t be expected to survive zone 7 winters, although whatever sprang forth from my Incense (decorative) many years ago, now populates wherever it can in my yard.
I do have Frederick, but I cut back the top, dig it up, and bring it in to place under lights for the winter. I haven’t tried leaving it out, although it probably would have been fine with protection this past, mild winter.
