Best Training for Sweet Cherries?

What is the best way to shape and train young sweet Cherry trees??

I planted two trees last year and they survived the Kentucky winter just fine.

So, I am wondering what is the best way to train them for good fruit production.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

John… I am not a sweet cherry expert by any means… but I do have one growing here since 2018… Lapins.

This is the first year that it looks to bear first fruits.

I have pruned it over the years mostly to make it grow out as much as it wants to grow up. Sort of modified central leader with a focus on growing out.

I am ao happy to finally have fruit on this Lapins cherry.

I have seen several youtube vids of sweet cherries being pruned using KGB method.

The one linked above shows that.

His tree appears to be quite open and he prunes each limb the same way… The focus appears to be keeping it open and height control.

Good luck to you !

Thank you TN,

I watched that video and got some good ideas!

Congrats on finally getting some Lappins cherries!

I also love Lappins flavor.

Right now I have just two cherry trees. Blackgold and Lappins!

Both seem to have survived their first and second winter, so I am quite glad about that.

The lappins does not seem to put on very much growth each year. Not much vigor. Has that been your experience also with it???

I think you will do better weather wise being in TN. I got a couple flowers on my Lappins even though it is still a baby, but they may have been knocked out by late spring frosts with two days this week around 30 degrees at night.
