Best White Sapote Variety for my area

Hi there,
I live in Castlemaine Australia where it can dip below 0 on winter nights, but it probably wouldn’t get below -6.
I have been looking into different varieties, but it’s hard to find the most cold hardy variety.

First and foremost I want one that can survive in my garden, but I’ll be planting it in a semi-protected spot.
Secondly I want it to have yummy fruit, I do want sweetness, but I also value a good flavour. 1 reason I don’t like custard apples is because they’re just sweet with no flavour.
Thirdly I’d like it to have big fruit, and or is a heavy producer.

I heard “Northrop” was a cold hardy variety, but I’m really not sure.
Let me know what varieties you think would work the best!
Thanks in advance.

Hi @Fergus welcome to Growing Fruit!

Since you’re in Australia, I assume those temperatures you mentioned are 0°C and -6°C ?

yes!

Ok, very good.

At maturity, White Sapote produces more fruit per square foot of canopy than any other fruit tree. So don’t be concerned about small crops.

White Sapote contains a large number of seeds in the center of the fruit. Some cultivars have a reasonable pulp-to-seed ratio, but the larger-fruited varieties do not.

As for taste, the important question is “how bitter is the skin”. Here in the states we have found that cultivars with low bitterness in semi-arid southern California have higher bitterness in the humid U.S. southern states – and vis a vis.

How’s your climate in Castlemaine Australia?
