Big box fruit trees in short supply this season

That is a nice healthy lookingFK. A very good buy for $35 if someone needs one.

Tony

yes they are. this store had 6 or 7

I almost never look at the fruit trees at any of the big box stores around here. Might need to re-evaluate that… though I’m probably not buying any apples, or pears, and certainly no stonefruits.

Was kind of surprised to see Q.falcata(Southern Red oak) at a couple of places this spring, as well as some pretty nice Dunstan chestnut seedlings - and Elliott pecan seedlings (probably not a good choice this far north as it is a FL-origin tree that leafs out early… but maybe the seedlings have a hardier parent).

I made a trip to Home Depot today and looked at their fruit tree selection. The store is in Middletown,RI. They had:

Red Delicious, Yellow Delicious, Gala (dwarf), Barlett Pear, Kiefer Pear, Harmony Plum, Santa Rosa Plum,(1) Montmorency Cherry, Early Elberta Peach and Red Haven Peach. Except for the singleton Cherry tree, there were about four trees of each type and that is it! Barely inspiring!

My Menards had like 10 Contender very early and they were gone in a few days. I almost bought one… I think they were upper $20s… nice trees full of flowers. I haven’t seen anything since that i’d want. Pretty picked over the last few times i’ve been in there. Most years it seems like they get another shipment in later.

TheBoxStores seem well stocked this year.

I agree. Home Depot had a good amount of peaches and plums, and Lowes had the berries. Also a good selection of citrus as usually. They also have alot of bareroot plants.

Idk maybe people I know stopped buying them because they were treated with Neonicotinoids (systemic pesticides). I wouldn’t buy them because I didn’t want to kill all my local pollinators. A couple years ago I was about to get a tree and they had a tiny label near the bottom tag that gave warning. Both Lowe’s and Home Depot said they would stop selling poisoned trees years ago but just started doing it with no care. Not sure if other states sell the treated trees but here in California they did.

I’ve personally never had an issue with it, but a coworker of mine bought Giant Milkweed from a local store (not a big box but also not a grower) and they were all treated with pesticides. She had moved her Monarch caterpillars over to it and they all died within a few hours. The store owner claims to not have known about it and that it was the growers who did it, but who really knows.

That’s really terrible for your coworker. And especially the butterflies. Could be they didn’t know. Companies don’t hire their best nowadays. When I brought it up no employees or managers even heard of it. I did call to bitch out the nursery but they were so upfront about it all I couldn’t say much. Besides it’s really HD and Lowe’s responsibility.
