'Big Red' (marketed as "Wowza!") Dwarf Cherry, any info?

I think i answered my own question… i am just going to add Meteor and Northstar… i can get both for the cost of one Wowza. I will keep an eye out for when/if it goes on sale though.

Is ‘Sweet Thing’ available for purchase anywhere in the US? I could only find it being offered by Canadian vendors.

You can get it from honeyberry USA. I have one on order from them for shipping this fall. So should get it in probably 2 weeks.

I will take a photo of my Wowza leaf afterwork today. I think it looks similar. I got a couple of roots from a member here and I potted it last fall and they grew to a foot. I just wanted to make sure it is the right variety.

Like others said… Honeyberry USA sells it. Honeyberry USA says that all of their cherries are on their own roots… so grown from seed or cuttings? HB does not say anything in their description about suckering. but Treetime in Canada says that it is highly suckering and forms a hedge quickly. So no real need to buy more than 1 I dont think.

Linden Lane also says suckering is high.

So possibly one tree would be a good investment as @clarkinks likes to say. I did a search and didnt see any kind of patent or anything… so not sure how giving/trading or whatever with the suckers works out legally.

I wonder if I could reduce the suckering and improve vigor by grafting onto Evans tart cherry as a rootstock?

Here is my 2 rooted Wowza.

might work, ive grafted carmine jewel onto my montmorency tree and its been alive for a few years now with no issues.

Think of the suckers as deer/bunny/lawn mower insurance

Do we know what is superior about the new bush cherry Sweet Thing?

I was initially very interested in Sweet Thing, but I’m a little worried about production. The little bit of info on Wowza’s production make it seem like it may be a lower producer and I worry about that with Sweet Thing. Has the pursuit of bigger and sweeter come at the cost of productivity? Carmine Jewel is a great producer, but the other half of the parentage seems to be much lower production. I read about Erdi jubileum at this link that said, “yields have been disappointing.”

Time will tell and I can’t wait to see more reports. I hope it is fantastic, but having planted 2 Crimson Passion bushes a long time ago and eventually pulling them when they weren’t producing, I’m a bit cautious.

I read up on it and the others fairly well… Wowza does seem to have low production compared to the rest of the romance series but the others in the SK breeding program seem to vary in production dependent on growing zones… Z2,3 being lowest production and higher zones like yours and mine should be much greater. I dont remember where i read that though… i have been trying to gather things up myself and im devoting a whole block to cherries. I was going to ask you if you were going to or already are trying the Pearl series. (Black, Ebony, Burgandy). Im going to give them a go.

My experience with Crimson Passion just left a bad taste in my mouth, or maybe I should say no taste since I never got fruit. At the time a few folks selling and marketing them may have hinted at possible lower production and maybe a bit higher mortality than Carmine Jewel, but it turned out to be such a lemon I can’t imagine how anyone who actually grew it could have recommended it for sale. if I had space I’d certainly be more open to trialing more cherries, but it requires removing something at this point to add something.

The pearl series sound very good and I look forward to hearing how they do for you and others. I might try to figure out where to put one, but it sounds like they need a pollination partner so that adds to the challenge. With your row of cherries it sounds like you’ll have no issues with that. Have you already put in white gold and black gold cherries? From what I remember reading those seem like the most likely to produce with minimal disease here in the east.

Im putting in White Gold… also Utah Giant and most all of the sours. BT, Van, Lapins, Brooks, Evans, Sweet Thing etc etc.

No matter how i look at it its going to be alot of work (fun)…trying. I kinda figure i will omit some here and there due to SWD… some may do well and some may not… trial and error i reckon.

I’m planting a white gold in 2 weeks. Lemme know how yours does!

Also doing Juliet, carmine, 2 nanking, sweet thing. Above all at my parents house.

And a cutie pie at my house (I have barely any room) so hopefully it’s as dwarf as they say.

I hope the plum cuculio don’t find you you. Once they found my cherries I would hardly find a single worm free cherry, so that was when I began spraying surround. The size of the bush cherries make that a lot easier and actually my Juliet is probably 9 feet tall. I get much worse coverage on Juliet because of the height than the Carmine Jewel bushes, so sometimes pitting Juliet cherries is a bit of worm roulette.

Nanking i think does best with two separate genetic plants… I also have Nanking but it blooms and never produces fruit… not sure how true that is but i bought both of mine at the same place at the same time YMMV.
