I have the basic āNankingāā¦ someone on one of the FB groups had some awesome plain jane ones and said that production went 10X once they had a different genetic strainā¦ not sure if that is true or not but makes sense.

Yeah, everything Iāve read says they arenāt self fertile. Iāll probably add the 3rd one I didnāt get at a later point if those 2 do well.
I ordered one of the sweet thing cherries from honeyberry USA this year. it was supposed to arrive this fall but it seems their propagator in Canada is not going to send a truck down until March or April of 2025. if I get them and they thrive after a few years, you are welcome to come by and take a sucker and give them a try at your place if you want. since Iām new to cherries it would give me the opportunity to see how dormant suckers are harvested and propagated, so its a win win.

It is a pretty easy process and I actually did a little video on it a while back in case anyone needs to see how easy it is. Probably the biggest thing is you donāt get much growth the first year since it is spending time rebuilding a good root system.

I wasnāt given that option. I trust honeyberry USA will fulfill their orders in the spring. Iām not worried.
I had pretty good luck propping sweet thing this summer from the bushes I got this spring. The new plants werent hardy enough to leave outside for the winter so Im going to try to keep them alive under lights. Not sure how thats going to goā¦ Some plants are easier to keep inside during the winter than others.

So the sweet thing I got is quite small. But great roots. The cutie pie is already like a small bush.

Iāve got 2 that are about 4ft this year, should get fruit if we donāt get a late freeze. They are suckering already fwiw. Iām more hopeful for my sweet thing bushes but wonāt get fruit from them this year.

I had a lot of blossoms on my wowza, they are taller than I thought, each about 6ft tall, but hardly any fruit set, maybe a couple dozen per bush. We didnt have great weather when they were flowering, and they are also a ways away from my other cherries, not sure if they are not self fertile or what. Pretty disappointing. Im hoping I get a few to taste at least, but it seems like a waste of time to net a big bush for just a couple cherries.
Iām having this issue with romeo and juliet. My bushes have been in the ground 7 years and are probably 8ft tall. Pretty good sized. I get a ton of flowers, the bushes are healthy but they still dont set well for me. I keep telling myself next year. The romeo and juliets have maybe a pint of cherries each, carmine jewel probably has a quart. It was enough for me to net them for freeh eating but probably not enough to do anything with. I expected lbs per bush by now. Pollination shouldnt be an issue, I have plenty of sour cherries and the temps were nice during bloom.

I read somewhere that bush cherries can be heavy feeders, are you giving them any fertilizer?
I have been, and they are growing well. you can really push them pretty good from my experience, but as with most bushes and trees, you wanna stop feeding them a few months before they go dormant. I looked up my order date from gurneys and it is Order Date: 06/11/20, and they are a good 6ft tall now, so they are growing pretty good. I dug enough suckers up to plant a full 300ft row this spring and they are growing well in pots right now. Problem is, Im not sure I wanna dedicate space to cherries that Ive had for 5 years and havent gotten a single cherry from yet, when I could plant another row of juliet or cupid or something more productive.

Picked my first wowza today. Fruit are smaller than Juliet and also have a more bitter aftertaste. Not impressed at all. Combine this with the low production and oblong pitts, Iām not sure why they are even selling it. Juliet on the right in this picture.
