Just found out about a company called Light Bio that’s selling bioluminescent petunias. I don’t even like petunias but i bought some
Can you imagine a backyard like the planet of the movie The Avatar?
My dream as a kid was to have the Kirby nighttime dream world like stage but as a bedroom now that I’m old, I kind of want it as an adult but without highly contributing to light pollution although i do love bioluminescent things.
I think it would be really cool to have plants instead of lamps leading up to my door… also if there can be ones activated by touch you can see footprints, the wind, etc. This is really exciting stuff!
These have been around a few years…I know we’ve had at least one thread on it here.
I’m torn on these types of things…especially potential long term consequences like the effects on pollinators. Does the gene readily propagate via seed?
They look like fun, but I think I’ll stick to my traditional petunias for now.
Also they’re only hardy down to about 27 degrees or so I’ve read/zone 9+ and I’m in 8 so I don’t think unless i try, it would sprout.
Yes! I didn’t hesitate to put an order in as soon as reddit told me it actually glows!
I’m thinking of putting these in hanging pots or along my walkway too!
If they made everblooming lilies… oh man I’d pay hundreds for them. Wheres that one dude who said he could never imagine paying so much for a plant I’ll do it for him.
I have some. My originals ended up being eaten by aphids except for a cutting I managed to save. This years round has thrips after about a month indoors. I don’t know if the plants are especially susceptible to pests, or if this is just how petunias are, or its just coincidence, but it seems like bugs really love them. I keep one in a guest bedroom as a surprise for anyone who notices it, so far only one guest.
It is not supposed to be true to seed and isnt supposed to reliably transmit the mushroom genes to offspring, I think its a requirement for its approval that there is minimal risk of the introduced genes escaping back into nature.
The company is working on new colors and new species. Supposedly chrysanthemums are next.
I haven’t seen these; but, if the luminescense genes are from fungi, the amount of light they produce will probably only be noticeable in very dark conditions. They will not be bright enough to light up a walkway and will likely not show any visible lumination if there is anything like street lighting around.
