How to get scions of Indian Free and Pêche de Vigne? Thank you.
Cricket hill Garden sells indian free peach scions.
Fruitwood has both in stock: Peach Scionwood and Seeds : New Zealand Black Peach Scionwood
NZ Black is an alternate name for BB.
Thank you!!!
Thanks!!!
That name sounds so much better than BB… Bb just puts me off because who wants to eat another human?
Ive renamed it to Purple Girl on grafts ive done personally for a friend (who gives them away to diff people [possibly some black friends], so i don’t want people or their kids seeing a tag on a tree that says that and wonder how it got that name in first place, like if it has a racist heritage). It is a bit more purple than black anyway.
Good to know other name.
I’m unsure of the actual etymology of the cultivar, but “Whoa! Seriously?” was my reaction the first time seeing it. NZB better conveys it being a weird colored peach from New Zealand. I just wish there were more red fleshed nectarines floating around.
Yeah the name BB just rubs me the wrong way since typically on the far far past, it denotes racist things. I don’t like having those notions around my life. My family is extremely mixed so the name itself makes me uncomfortable oveall. I don’t want my nephews to come by and asking about names like that or even them having to research that stuff. It seems unnecessary. I understand racism is part of American history but it doesn’t have to be apart of American life. Really wish all the nurseries would change the names of this one.
I think I’ll rename mine Purple Princess
peche de vinge
There’s a “raspberry” red fleshed Nectarine floating around from the California rare fruit growers. I’m looking into getting a piece of it ![]()
‘NZ Black’ sounds like a newer rebranding to avoid calling it ‘Black Boy.’ Personally, I prefer to go with the older known name which for this peach is ‘Peche de Vigne.’ There are at least a couple references on NZ based websites casually mentioning that their ‘Black Boy’ peaches ARE ‘Peche de Vigne,’ so that’s how I label mine. I’d hate to start seeing this delicious peach getting circulated under multiple new names to avoid calling it ‘Black Boy’ when it already has a perfectly good name that predates the name given to it in NZ. The more names it is given the more people will accidentally buy it multiple times thinking they’re getting multiple varieties (in the future when those names start getting picked up by nurseries).
One interesting but mostly useless anecdotal datapoint from this year is that my one year old graft of BB from Raintree bore fruit true to type, while the same age graft of fruitwoods NZB was froze out completely on the same rootstock.
How was the fruit?
I had some a few years ago and it was the best peaches I ever had (from a tree i gave away to a friend).
Last year maybe one was amazing, but others were mealy (maybe one a tiny bit rotted from the inside out).
The fruit that avoided the ofm (last spray was 5 weeks prior to ripening) was not as sweet as my other peaches, but it had a nice raspberry flavor. It fit a flavor and harvest window that worked for me. I will make sure to stay on top of my sprays this coming season.
I’m planning on building a little cover for mine
still going to spray dormant oil but that’s it.
In Colorado, it was so nice to not have to spray my trees. That’s one thing that i miss about that horrid place. And the food trucks although expensive. And my neighbors.
