For those who grow Black Oxford how would you rate the time for it to fruit is it precocious. I dont spray at all disease resistance compared to other apple trees you grow. Any other info would be appreciated thanks
My small grafted tree had fruit the first growing season.
On what rootstock? my will be on G890 and m111 and also grafting scion wood on same type of mature trees for those in the know time to flower? Thanks
Also, for those of you who grow it when does it start to really start dropping fruit. I live about 30 miles north of pittsburgh pa Thanks
I grafted BO on Honey Crisp tree 4 years ago. It is fruiting this year. I think I got the correct variety. The skin is quite dark red/purplish. None has dropped yet.
I am in zone 6a MA. I don’t know when it will ripen.
Thanks for the info
I read a blog of a guy who grows Black Oxford in MN. Not sure what zone but my guess is either 5 or 6. His apples ripen in early to mid Oct. Mine should start to ripen between now and the next 10 days.
In fact, one of my BO dropped today. I don’t know if I want to eat it any time soon. My experience with dense-fleshed apple like BO and Arkansas Black is that, they taste better and more mellow once they have been in storage for a few months.
I don’t recall what rootstock it was. It was something very common, possibly M111.
Thanks for your reply
I’ve got it on MM.111, planted a few years ago. It’s got a couple of fruit on it, which look basically ripe. I’ve been waiting patiently before starch-testing one of them.
FWIW, I expect a much bigger crop next year.
OK, I picked. Here’s the result. Starch test shows that the apple was basically ripe. There was just a slight graying after application of iodine solution.
Wow nice looking apple can’t wait till am able to harvest some
FWIW, I spray minimally – not at all this year. Black Oxford seems relatively free of problems.
Alright great to know thanks
