Blackberries, Raspberries and Hybrids

Alot of it has to do with water… i did the best testing that i could here with this years drought…it was one of the worst droughts that i can remember.

Some of the best flavored berries that i have had.

I think fruitnut restricts all water after December in things that he is wanting to brix up…

So maybe one year dont water anything after bud break and test for yourself.

I am not in control of the weather… usually my prime arks like to ripen after a rain in the early spring or late fall… so i dont like them at all myself.

For starters they’re not holding their hand flat, they’re cupping their hand pretty tightly. And with the harsh lighting it’s hard to tell, but their palm is basically empty and the berries are just sitting on their fingers where they look much bigger.

The same coin.

That being said Kiowa is big. Big plant, big berries, big thorns. Big pain. Big production.

Is this legit? From naplants.com

“… wholesale nursery … intended only for those engaged in the business of buying and selling nursery products”

“The minimum order for a shipment within the United States constitutes: 500 plants per variety”

how are you planning on buying from them?

With my tax exemption. I would have them shipped 3day max.
I dont have time for that, but here’s a source. Personally you cant beat Krismoriahs huge crowns

Sounds like I missed that buss.

There are 2 victory, and 2 newberry in that photo. Certainly not large there, but they still grew pretty well this year. Even though the deer found them, each victory plant put on around 8ft of pcane length. I’m thinking about grabbing siskiyou now too.

I paid a bit more than you I bet for my 2 year crowns.

Totally Legit. I talked them into selling me 250 plants… i think they were $4 each. Shipping was $250.

Not only that they had to propagate them just for me because no other nursery was buying them… which made me last in line and they arrived in late June…

So at least we have them going again and available whether thru me or the ones on here that have gotten them… its honestly a nightmare to keep them from not tip rooting… so you guys will have lots and lots of plants if you want them.

@CAvocado u are welcome to a crown. I think i have 6 left? I only have a few Siskiyou left so if you are interested the timing is good. I was saving them for another member but im not sure they are going to go thru with it… the window of me doing this is closing soon.

I have plenty of Kotata left… maybe a dozen… if anyone wants to try them.

I think i may have 4 or so Silvanberry.

Maybe 1-2 Phenomenalberry.

Coming 2026 i should have some sort of review for Riwaka Boysenberry and 2 new to me blackberries… fun times.

Anyone actually growing Big Daddy?
Shopping on Ison’s and came across this “new” variety.

Ponca has done well for me but I allowed the insane drought to wipe most of my young plants out. So, need to replace and wondering about Big Daddy…

Somewhere up in this thread is some info on it. Its not very big.
Its a U of Ark variety that didnt really make their cut to put their own name on it…from what i gather. These look to me like the kingberry and the rest on the cluster will be smaller. YMMV

Yes… and supposedly the most cold hardy of the trailing ones.

It sends the most canes of all the trailing ones i have… and is the most frustrating and labor intensive one that i grow.

What could be the most frustrating aspect besides thorns? Does it take over and send root sprouts everywhere?

Too many canes… ultra vigorous. I suspect due to the traits of the red raspberry. Lots and lots and lots of pruning.

Also it is similar to red rasp in that roots are more shallow and thrive in well drained nearly devoid of water soil.

Not much if any root suckering for me… crown stays tight and dense.

I searched through this thread and got this:
https://growingfruit.org/search?context=topic&context_id=54962&q=%22big%20daddy%22&skip_context=false

Checking through the results I only saw two people who mentioned trying it, @krismoriah who said that he pulled it out, and then @RobertH:

I found another pic of the fruits from agristarts.

DETA-629

First harvest in Ark. was June 7… plants are very erect. Cold hardiness known is 1F.

Here is the patent application. I have no idea where the name Big Daddy came from…but seems like most every small nursery is carrying it now… likely due to the lack of new releases from U of Ark… and lack of interest in the new USDA releases.

I bought Honey Queen this past summer, but I’m guessing you are referring to a different variety.

From what I have seen, the berry is as long as Prime-Ark Freedom but not as round in shape. If it’s subtly sweet or better next year, I’ll be satisfied. Hopefully it fruits next year for me.

I am looking forward to seeing how Hall’s Beauty does for me next year. Supposedly double flowers and high yielding sweet berries. Been looking for a high yielding plant like Navaho combined with a sweet berry producer like Sweetie Pie.

Starting to get into trailing varieties…

Honey Jewel

This is the only info released on them so far…

Honey Jewel Raspberries – A unique variety with a rich flavor. Known for their velvety texture and intense sweetness, these rare berries fruit on primocanes, giving you a longer harvest season from summer through fall. Their tall canes grow up to 5 feet, so be sure to provide a sturdy trellis for support. With vibrant color, rich flavor, and a bountiful yield, Honey Jewels are perfect for fresh eating and freeze beautifully for later!
