Hi all, my first post here. I have some triple crown blackberries that I planted last year. I understand the primocane/floricane cycle but some of this new growth so far this spring has me confused. There are laterals on the current floricanes that are popping out now and getting long, but some of these growing lower on the main stem near the ground are especially long and vertical. Do new primocanes grow out from the plant like this (on what appears to be the base of the floricane) or should all new primocanes come directly out of the soil like a sucker? I hope the question is clear, thank you. Full disclosure, I may have added a little too much fertilizer about 5 weeks ago. Or maybe they are just really vigorous plants no matter what!
first of all, welcome to your new addiction. yes primocanes come out of the soil like a sucker. new plants do some weird things sometimes. ive had newly planted florocane fruiting raspberries fruit the 1st year on new primocanes. think its a survival thing. mother nature plays by her own rules sometimes.
Thanks for the insight. Yes it is turning into a bit of an addiction. I have Triple Crown, Quachita, Arapaho, Apache, and Navaho. I plan on giving some updates along the way since I’ve gotten a lot of info from this forum when I was selecting the varieties and planting them
