Blackberry pruning

Anybody pruning Blackberry like Dr Powell in attached video?

I can not find his method listed any of the research I could locate.

I like it for a home grower. I’ll try it this yr with my western trailing already on a trellis. But it’s a lot of pruning and care compared to other systems. I’d suspect the yield will be low also compared to a wider row system.

Anybody using a shift trellis system for blackberries?

Lower budget version of shift trellis.

David,

Do you have any idea how much the commercial version of this trellis costs?

I like Dr Powell’s idea better than a double trellis. It can be done on one trellis.

@blueberrythrill Rick I don’t know how much they cost.

The company is trellis growing systems LLC Fort Wayne, IN

Just to add more growing / pruning systems to this tread.
This is Navajo thornless blackberry on a simple V trellis.

David,

I’m going to check the price. I expect it will be beyond my reach. I saw one of the early shift trellis systems at a VPI research farm in Blackstone, Virginia in the late 1980’s. It was designed by Dr. Styles who made changes and improvements to his original design over the years, Here is a link to some of the designs with good pictures:

Another link to NC State with a video of a grower demonstrating her shift trellis. I have seen this trellis which is made from pressure treated lumber. It was heavy and cumbersome but it worked for the grower.

I’m not impressed with the increase in yield (if any) brought about by the system.

My trellis is similar to the one in your picture, but my pruning method is different. Are those your blackberry?

I would like to try the pruning system but I don’t think my upright varieties would adapt very well. Apparently the Kiowa in his video is trailing. Every time I stop at his place (Petals) I look at this row in the video. They look healthy and look like they could fruit forever. Bill
