Blueberry picking season about over

Picked about three quarts of Climax rabbit eye’s this morning. I put the nets back on so the grands will have some when they come by.

Nets back on after picking

Just started picking here about a week back.
We’d gotten pretty dry, but several consecutive days of good rains have caused major cracking/splitting of ripening berries, and even those that aren’t split are less flavorful, due to the sudden influx of water.

I like those. Mosquito nets. Where did you get them? Do you know what size? I got some but they are too small. Those look about right! My blueberry season is just starting, I have a good month of picking!

Still work towards ripening

Pink Popcorn ripens first, about 5 days ago. Spartan and Kabluey are starting to ripen. Loading up to take up north. My Utah Giant sweet cherries are ripe too. Excellent cherries!

Very nice! My blueberries mostly go to birds. I bet these pale white blueberries the birds will not steal. Is Utah Giant a soft cherry or harder cherry?

Like Bing, cracks like bing too. I only get about a dozen of them. Two young grafts on my White Gold. I wanted to add a few more, but they all failed on me this year. Well I did also graft Emperor Francis om and it took, one graft anyway.

White gold and Utah Giant

For my blueberries I bought some PVC and built a temporary cage with a 30 by 30 net.

My white gold bloomed but did not set fruits(later spring frost damage). Black gold bloomed later and escaped the later spring frost but somehow only set one fruit! Both grafts are young, hopefully next year I will get more fruits. My starkrimson is reliable fruit producer here and I like its firm texture .

I bought these a couple of years ago at Walmart. They might not sell them from the store now. They are a good size for blueberry bushes 5-6’ high.

Mixed bag…some early some late, and tried Hardyblue for first time…mild but with some wild blueberry flavor in the mix. Sunshine Blue got badly damaged at 23 degrees after berries were well set and growing. A couple I’ve lost tags for seemed as tasty as normal, despite all the rain.

Brightwell not ripe yet, Tifblue barely turning, Aurora all green and half grown.

Wife and I picked 3 gallons of BBs this morning; only picked about half the bushes. Every time you turn around, you see some you missed… will get that many or more tomorrow.
I remember going home to AL to visit my Dad during BB season… he was glad to see us and the 4 kids roll in… said he’d already picked to the point that he was having nightmares about picking blueberries… and he only had about 15 big old rabbiteye blueberries… Think we picked and ate all we wanted for about a week, and brought 40 quarts of berries home in coolers to go in the freezer for the winter.
Youngest son - when he comes home to visit - can (and will) eat a gallon of berries in a day… I’ve put about 15 quarts in the freezer this season, trying to get ahead of him… and still have quite a few left from last year.

No big harvests here, but I still have a few hundred unripe berries on containerized blueberry plants, which are in shade much of the day. Gooseberries became birdfood over past 10 days.

I only have a few blueberry bushes but I must admit that I like that the grands come by I don’t have to pick. I usually finish up what they miss the following day.
