Bonnie/Burpee strawberry cultivar?

Hi all, I’m highly annoyed; my local Lowes and Walmart carry Bonnie strawberries, but I’m lucky if they specify if they’re everbearing or not. Otherwise I have no identifying factor to what cultivar they are. Does anybody have the inside scoop? Same question for Burpee Organic strawberries which are oh-so-helpfully described as bearing delicious red fruits that need full sun. Thanks, Burpee. I don’t even know if those are June or everbearing! Anyway, help is appreciated! (Cross posting with a different gardening forum)

I’m curious too. My first ever strawberry was a “container variety “ in one of those hanging containers from Bonnie. I put in the ground and it’s just as aggressive as the rest of my June bearers. I’ve thought about removing it because it’s not as good as my other varieties, but decided to leave it as it’s decent enough. Seems to fruit 2 or so weeks after earliglow

Most of them are everbearing/full on day neutral now
I’m not aware that Bonnie or Burpee hold June-bearing these days. My favorite from Bonnie has been the “Sweet Berry” variety. I’m actually even planning on making a bed of just that as well.

I think most box store Bonnie plants that just say ‘strawberry’ and no other words are Quinalt. Especially the 4" pots.

The Mrs. filled 2 of those tall standing multi-tier pots with Bonnie Strawberries. They are watery and tart. Not good at all.

Similar experience. For several years I’ve been trying everything I could think of to get our strawberries to taste better with little luck. I finally bought another variety this year and they actually taste like strawberries! At this point I think I’m going to rip out the Bonnie ones and replace them with the new variety.

VERY good to know! I’m hunting down some more everbearing so maybe I’ll plop some of those in.

@krismoriah Good to know - I did find a Burpee tower that actually said Quinalt so maybe it’s all of them?

@dannytoro1 @ste7enda7id VERY good to know about the standard Bonnie options - I’ll avoid those, more likely than not. What variety are you replacing with?

Right now I have Allstar June-bearers, a cambiante everbearer (not in my extension office’s paperwork so I know nothing about it), and I’m hoping for more of something else if I can find anything good. Locally I’ve also found Delizz, Junio and White Carolina, anybody got experience with those?

I don’t think so because quinault only gives 2 harvests a season and these guys flower every 2-3 weeks or so.

I’m thinking more Seascape because they seem to act the same as my named Seascape that pushes flowers every 2-3 weeks.

Too much watering and not picked ripe. You gotta let it hang for at least 3 days after turning red and let the soil dry out until it almost starts to wilt for the flavor to kick in lol

Flowers twice a year and is not day neutral lol. They also need a pollinator from my experience.

Second year+ fruit is much bigger.

I’m trying delizz again this year. Last year i ended up killing it

I planted Mara des bois this year.

@Melon I tried everything! Unfortunately nothing worked. Maybe there’s just something wrong with the ones I got. I can pick the Mara des bois strawberries as soon as they turn red and they taste 1000x better, even though they’re first year plants.

I’ve noticed the Bonnie options, despite having the same names (or lack thereof), have both a white-flowering and a red-flowering option. Thoughts? Does that narrow the field at all?

Holy cow Bonnie got back to me!

"Our core strawberry variety with the generic tag is the high-quality Montana strawberry, a new variety. This ornamental, everbearing strawberry is not only compact and produces large white flowers, but it also yields abundant medium-sized sweet berries, making it a truly delightful and visually stunning addition to any garden. It requires full sun and regular watering, and it’s best to plant it in well-drained soil.

We also offer our Home Depot Harvest Select strawberry variety in hanging baskets and the 5" pot, the **‘**Roman,’ Fragaria x ananassa. This variety produces glossy foliage, large pink flowers, and delicious, aromatic fruit, making it a highly ornamental strawberry and a favorite among home gardeners!

Our Lowe’s Foodie Fresh ‘Sweet Berry Bloom’ is an everbearing edible ornamental variety that produces deep pink double flowers. Its versatility allows it to thrive in beds, hanging baskets, or containers, giving you the freedom to plant it wherever you desire."

Roman is also another name for “apple blossom” if i recall correctly.

That’s pretty cool they told you/us :astonished::astonished::astonished::astonished:

Mannnnn, Montana… i had a tiny one but it died on me. Guess I’ll have to grab it again and see what to do with the Seascape then. I was almost certain it was Seascape. Oh well.

There’s another red flowering from lowes that i think is Toscana because the color and fruit are the same shape and size as Toscana. It’s not from Burpee or Bonnie i think, it just says Lowes everbearing. I waited 4 days for it to ripen after turning red but it’s very tart still. Maybe I’ll try to wait a little longer but the birds were looking for berries yesterday so i picked it at 4 days

I bought my old Montana from Burpee.

Will probably grab a few more from lowes if i can’t find my other ones from them.

Hahaha that’s the best way to put it XD I’m starting from scratch so I’m a “do it right cuz I don’t want to do it over” gal but I’ve got room for experiments, especially when the majority of Ohio-recommended cultivars aren’t super accessible. We’ll see how it goes!
