Hi, we are in southeast kansas near fredonia (zone 7a) just bought our house last year and were lucky enough to find one with several exsisting fruit trees.
3 apples: Red delicious, yellow delicious, and fuji
3 pears of unknown variety
3 peaches of unknow variety and were heavily damaged by deer but have new growth from the base.
1 grape vine of unknow variety.
But we did not get any yeild from any of the trees last year. They pears and apples both flowered in the spring but did not fruit.
How do i figure out what variety of grape/peach/pear i have and what do i need to know about caring for these trees?
Im also looking to add more fruit trees and berries gradually over the next few years. Plums, blackberries and cherries are on the list this year. Where do i find decent healthy trees that do well in my area?
I bought trees from a reputable local nursery as they only carry what is known to grow in my zone. Also I ordered berries from a reputable tree and berry supplier located in my state, Raintree Nursery. So while people will make lots of suggestions of good places to get trees and berry starts, I will recommend you check for Kansas or nearby states for the best nursery to buy a tree sapling. Mail order often is smaller than a local nursery for shipping reasons. I avoid big box stores, like Home Depot, due to less reliability that the variety is marked right, less variety choice, not dependable that the variety sold grows well in our areas, and unknown if it was cared for well so it may be stressed. They can be cheaper though.
@39thparallel (a nurseryman) and @clarkinks (a frequent contributor to the forum) are only about two hours north of you, and they can suggest a great many trees that they have personally grown in their area.
Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you’re on your way to good things to come. Audi o phile mentioned above definitely talk to them.
You might be grafting soon also might want to look that up if you don’t already know. It’s easy. Good luck
If your peach trees have growth from the base, that might all be root stock. It might need to be taken out, or maybe you can or should graft on it, depending on the size and condition of your trees overall.
Can you pl post some pictures of your trees when you get a chance?
When I think about what to plant or graft, I think about what my family and I like to eat, what isn’t readily available at high quality near us or what varieties are not available, what grows well in my climate and location, and what I’m excited to grow and what I’d like us to try. Not necessarily in that order
How are the trees watered if at all? And what kind of sun/shade are they in all day? i.e. how much sunlight do they get?
Finally, what kind of soil do you have?
There are a LOT of really experienced folks here and a lot of amazingly informative threads. I would not be surprised if some of this info on specific varieties that are great for your location is already posted somewhere on this forum.
I can definitely take some pictures soon. And on the trees geowing back from the base, how would i know if they re infact only root stalk? The leaves look the same as they did from the top of the tree before they were so heavily damaged.
The have a lot of sun but get some shade from a couple of pecan trees during the late afternoon during the hottest part of the day.
There is a well near the trees but it needs a new pump so mostly they have been getting water from rainfall and at times we carry out buckets bc the hoses dont quite reach.
I think the neighbor said we have loamy or loamy silt or something like that.
We are getting apples this year but no pears and the peaches are likely not going to have anything for a few years.
