Looks like a great place to buy from. Curious why people don’t send scions to California? Or bareroot trees? I thought if there was no soil it shouldn’t be a problem.
It is the very strict California regulations.
Thanks Danny. I didn’t realize it was for cuttings and bareroot trees too. Besides persimmons and citrus.
I’ve met Darren… he drove down and spent a day with me in Fall 2022 or 2021(I’ve slept since then), when some of the young nutgrowing guys from up east were here.
Really nice guy, and I enjoyed the visit. Now, as to how he and Espri run their nursery… I don’t know. They are Mennonite… first time I’d known one who drove a car… souped-up tractors with street tires on front are the preferred mode of transporation for our local Mennonites.
I ordered scion from there last year and had no issues. The website is awkward compared to some, but the product was good and I had it less than a week from when I submitted my order.
The only thing I do not get is they say they will not ship to a bunch of states. But do not specify what is “restricted”. Or if they will ship things not restricted to said banned states. Kind of an order kill.
I love what they have for scions maybe long term they wont stay small. Hopefully growingfruit members help them out and they can supply to all the states eventually. I think some people were way to critical of the website in this thread https://brambleberrypermaculture.square.site/s/order
We all started out young and i hope the best for these younger people. I will give them a hand up every chance i get! The next generation of fruit growers is important to this country. We need more young people like these. Just based on what many long time members said about this couple we know they are great people to deal with.
Oh I agree. I just wish they would say what is restricted to where. To be honest I did not think Georgia had any restrictions until now.
I thought the same about Kansas. In a couple of years im betting all that will be resolved.
Weird. It is slightly cheaper here to be a licensed Plant Dealer then being a Grower. Yet the dealers predominately bring in the problematic plants. I guess the assumption is their plants imported pass other state’s inspection.
For those curious what the current state regs are:
And keep in mind it depends a lot on where your shipping from in a lot of cases.
So practically all citrus is restricted and quarantined here. Plus a lot of my favorites. Honeysuckle, Wisteria, Rose of Sharon, Mimosa’s. And a dozen others. Petunia and Lantana??? Seriously?
Yeah… all of those are introduced, aggressive invasive aliens. With the exception of the honeysuckle, the others have been upstaged by the plague of callery pears.
True; but they are all badly endemic.
I know.
My Dad waged war for years on Chinese wisteria that I’m sure my grandmother planted in the 1940s… some trunks were bigger than my sizeable thighs. Kudzu is preferrable, IMO.
Driving home to east-central AL to visit, I can still visualize the vast expanses of Albizia (“mimosa”) on the roadside banks alongside I-65, just north of Birmingham. I haven’t been back that way in years… would not be surprised to see them crowded out by callery seedlings.
Just north of Huntsville, along I-65, there is an area of about 10 acres that is almost all Callery. It looks very pretty when in bloom. Otherwise, it is an ecological nightmare.
We used to curse Kudzu in Atlanta. Everytime we crossed the interstate walking to College; you got run over by rodents living in the Kudzu. They should call it Ratweed.
Until they start shipping to KS you could order scionwood and have it shipped to someone (a friend or family member) in a nonrestricted state and have them relay the package to you. Or you could just be patient, but patience isn’t my strong suit, lol.
They have opened up shipping to other locations now
I am in Georgia, I got an email from them earlier stating that they would now ship to me.
It was too late for any of the Pawpaw that I wanted, but I did get a stick or two of several persimmons.
I am clueless as to what other states have been added. Anyone that wanted anything, but could not order due to location, might need to contact them.
Good luck finding what you need.
