I wish you success in your breeding efforts! If one of those late leafers also happens to have lower susceptibility to fruit rotting, then you really have a winner. I think my pomegranates are beautiful and worth growing just for looks, but they aren’t easy to get consistent fruit from here in humid NC.
Yes it is hard here. My young pomegranates have died back every year except this year and last year due to late frosts.
I hope to expand the breeding project this year, since my other varietes are old enough to be blooming now, and hope to get some extra genetics in there from the crosses to hopefully help with rot resistance and late budding out.
Has anyone had any luck taking cuttings from small pomegranates or will it set them back being smaller? I’d like to propagate my later blooming ones so I’ll have a backup in case they die for some reason in the future. Or do you think I should wait until they get bigger? They are maybe 2 to 3 feet tall now.
